A questi luachi

Calabria

“In the past, air songs were mostly performed in the countryside, during farm work. It is a specialised repertoire with well-defined musical roles: first voice (soloist), second voices (accompaniment). It is generally performed by female groups that can be considered ‘professional’ in terms of specialised musical practice and the social consideration they enjoy. It is said that the best female singers were preferentially hired for agricultural work, precisely because of their vocal talents.”

“La capra che suona: immagini e suoni della musica popolare in Calabria”
di Antonello Ricci e Roberta Tucci

The separate voices found here have been recorded to try to help you understand the melodic lines within the chord. The advice is to always listen to the reference track or other versions of the song, which can be found online or even better live.

Recorded in Torano Castello (Cs) 22.8.1982

Soloist voice: Emilia Adamo
Accompanying voices: Annina Docimo, Rosaria Mazzei, Mafalda Sangineto
